Protecting Social Media Users in Afghanistan


Fearful of the Taliban, some Afghans are taking steps to remove what presence they have off the internet. Tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are scrambling to launch tools designed to protect users in Afghanistan, including releasing a feature to lockdown someone’s profile, preventing unwanted eyes from spying on them. Some are using social media to narrate the Taliban’s takeover in the hopes of keeping the public informed on what’s happening in their country.
